Beyond the Walls

Weekly Reading:

Day 1

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:1-2, Deuteronomy 8:2, 1 Corinthians 10:13

  1. How does understanding that Jesus was tempted just as Israel was challenged in the wilderness change your view of your own temptations?

  2. Considering that being tempted is not a sin, how can you shift your perspective from viewing temptation as a failure to seeing it as an opportunity for God to test and develop your character?

  3. What specific areas of your life feel like a "wilderness," and how can you prepare yourself to face the inevitable temptations that arise in those dry seasons?

Day 2

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:3-4, Exodus 16:14-16, John 6:35

  1. When you are physically or emotionally "hungry," how do you prioritize obedience to God's Word over immediate self-gratification or convenience?

  2. Jesus refused to turn stones into bread for himself, but later gave his body as bread for others. How does this contrast challenge your desire to satisfy your own needs, rather than serve God's mission for others?

  3. In what ways might you be relying on your own strength or resources to "get by," instead of trusting God to supply what you need, even when His way is inconvenient?

Day 3

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:5-7, Deuteronomy 6:16, Exodus 17:1-7

  1. How do you discern between a genuine promise of God and a misapplication of scripture that attempts to manipulate God to your will?

  2. When are you tempted to demand protection and security from God, rather than simply trusting and obeying Him through difficult or uncertain circumstances?

  3. How can you ensure your life's mission is about serving the Father, rather than forcing God to serve you?

Day 4:

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:8-10, Deuteronomy 6:13, 1 Samuel 15:22, Psalm 37:4

Questions:

  1. What "good" things in your life are currently distracting you from worshiping God alone and fulfilling His mission?

  2. In what ways might you be tempted to achieve a good or Godly outcome through means that are questionable or compromise your values?

  3. How can you ensure your life's mission is aligned with the way of the cross, where obedience and service take precedence over self-serving advancement and glory?

Day 5: The Victory and the Mission

Scripture Reading: Matthew 4:11, James 4:7, 1 John 1:9, Hebrews 4:16

Questions:

  1. How does Jesus' ultimate victory over temptation—with angels ministering to Him—encourage you that God will also sustain and minister to you through your own trials?

  2. What is one specific way you can use the power of God's Word to respond to temptation this week, just as Jesus did?

  3. What does it look like to live in the "relief" of Jesus' victory, knowing that He has secured our acceptance with the Father, freeing you to pursue God's mission in your life without striving for your own worthiness?
